2021 Rookie Quarterback Highlights
The top news and content from around the web
Ohio State QB Justin Fields
Junior 6’3 228 lbs
While Trevor Lawrence is the favorite to be the first player taken in the 2021 NFL Draft, the rest of the draft is filled with question marks. Ohio State QB Justin Fields looked to be right behind Lawrence, but he’s had a couple of bad games, which has people questioning if he’s worth being a top 5 pick now. Also, the rise of Zach Wilson, Kyle Trask & Mac Jones is making people second guess if Fields is QB2 or QB5. With that being said, Fields impressive performance against Clemson has reminded people how good he is.
Fields isn’t even having a bad season, but it’s just not living up to the hype he produced last season. Overall, he’s a dual-threat playmaker, which is not something to overlook. The league has been evolving as mobile dual-threat QBs have become more prominent with Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray & Russell Wilson leading the way. Even Patrick Mahomes, who isn’t necessarily known for his mobility, can run when needed. If a team wants someone who will make plays with both his arm & legs, Fields will be their guy.
Alabama QB Mac Jones
Junior 6’3 214 lbs
After losing star QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama turned to Mac Jones & the offense hasn’t taken much of a drop off. Of course, it helps to have potential 1st round offensive playmakers in Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith & Najee Harris, but Jones has been the leader. He’s made impressive throws all over the field & has a chance to win the Heisman. While Kyle Trask leads the nation in passing touchdowns, it’s Jones who many view as the current Heisman favorite. This can change, but as of right now Mac Jones is in the driver’s seat leading the No. 1 team in the country.
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence
Junior 6’6 220 lbs
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence has been called the best draft prospect since Andrew Luck. The hype increased after he beat Alabama in the National Championship as a True Freshman. Lawrence has had almost a perfect college career. He’s only lost two games, but those losses both came in the playoff. One was in the National Championship last year to Joe Burrow. Lawrence might be the best NFL prospect to not win a Heisman, but he’s most likely going to be the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft regardless.
North Dakota State QB Trey Lance
Sophomore 6’4 226 lbs
Joe Burrow, Tua Tagovailoa, Justin Herbert & Jordan Love were all drafted in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft. This year’s draft might have an even better quarterback class. Trevor Lawrence is viewed as the top overall player while Zach Wilson & Justin Fields are right behind him. NDSU QB Trey Lance will be joining them in the 1st round, especially after a great Pro Day performance. As a redshirt Freshman, Lance had one of the most impressive seasons in the history of college football. Not even 1st overall pick Joe Burrow did what he did. Lance threw for 2,786 yards & 28 TDs with ZERO interceptions while also running for 1,100 yards & 14 TDs. Lance’s ceiling is incredibly high. Some say he could be the best QB prospect since Patrick Mahomes.
BYU QB Zach Wilson
Junior 6’3 210 lbs
After an impressive 2020 season, BYU QB Zach Wilson is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Before the season, he wasn’t even thought to be “draftable,” but now some view him as a potential No. 2 overall pick right behind Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. Justin Fields, Trey Lance & Kyle Trask are also viewed as top QB prospects.
While Wilson may not win the Heisman, it’s incredible that he’s even getting this kind of attention. The most impressive thing about Zach Wilson has been his arm strength. Most people knew about his mobility & playmaking ability outside of the pocket, but he’s shown that he can stay in the pocket and deliver a beautiful deep ball like Josh Allen & Patrick Mahomes from time to time. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s viewed as a draft prospect throughout the draft season.
