Petite Sirah doesn’t get much richer than this wine, which was aged in French oak for 22 months. Black pepper and maple aromas lead to immense blueberry and blackberry flavors that layer over dark chocolate for a mouthfilling effect. Its velvety, palate-gripping tannins are just the right antidote to its opulent ripeness. Best through 2030.

This ultradark, ultrarich and massively tannic wine could easily age well for 30 years. An intense nose of dried black figs, charcoal and dark chocolate leads to concentrated, Port-like black-fruit flavors and a thick layer of fine-grained tannins that perfectly matches the intensity of flavor. Best from 2026.

Lodi | 2017

This powerful but elegant wine is concentrated, deeply flavorful and firmly structured. Luxurious black cherry, dark chocolate, graphite and a hint of tobacco leaf give it plenty to savor while a robe of fine-grained tannins wraps it up warmly. Best from 2024.

Lodi | 2015

Rating: 94

Very sophisticated and complex, this wine is one of Lodi’s very best. It has great balance and intriguing flavors ranging from black pepper to blackberries, to sage and smoked meat. It is full bodied and firmly tannic, but everything is in good proportions, making it mouthfilling and ever so slightly reserved at the same time. Made from 76% Syrah plus Carignan, Petite Sirah and a touch of Viognier. Best after 2023.

Lodi | 2015

Rating: 94

This is a rich, multi-layered wine from a Lodi winemaker who loves to push the envelope. It is full bodied and mouthfilling, ready for something equally indulgent like osso buco or Peking duck. Made from Petite Sirah, Syrah and Mourvèdre, it exudes black plum and milk chocolate in the aroma, and brings ripe red cherry and blackberry to the palate. Broad and mouthcoating in texture, the wine has a long finish, too.

Lodi | 2012

Rating: 94

Don’t let the cartoony label fool you, this is fantastic wine. The color is almost black to the rim, the aromas are meaty and peppery, and the flavors are very concentrated. The texture is thick and yet creamy with layered, smooth and bold tannins. For all its density and depth, however, this is not an overpowering monster. The blackberry and black pepper notes are rich and appealing and everything seems in balance for something this robust and full bodied. Drink now through 2027. It’s blended with 15% Petit Verdot.

Lodi | 2010

This dry Moscato Giallo from Lodi is delicious, with an intensely perfumed nose that follows through in the taste, alongside Meyer lemon, jasmine and cantaloupe. Very unusual, incredibly well priced and modest in alcohol, this lush, ginger-tinged Moscato is this taster’s desert-island white.

Lodi | 2009

Rating: 94

This might be one of the most interesting wines being made in California right now, a tiny production, 12%-alcohol Graciano, a grape native to Rioja and barely found in California. The wine is bright and very European, full of white pepper, cranberry and leather notes, high in acid and very clean, though it’s unfined and unfiltered. It lasts and lasts, getting better with every drop.

Lodi | 2019

This classic, full-bodied California Zin shows intriguing nuances of wild sage, bay leaf and dried meat backed by luscious blackberry and mulled plum flavors and supported by moderate tannins that keep it mouthwatering.

Lodi | 2020

Rating: 93

A creamy texture and layered flavors single out this full-bodied blend of white Rhône grape varieties as something special. It is fruity, featuring honeydew melon and golden apple, but not overtly so, blending in light vanilla and coconut nuances for a complex and delicious expression.

Lodi | 2019

Rating: 93

This well-balanced and full-bodied wine packs a nice punch. It shows concentrated fruit and spice flavors, with an appetizingly firm texture. Moderate tannins lift tasty blackberry, black pepper and rosemary notes. It’s made from mostly Zinfandel, plus Petite Sirah and Syrah.

This handsome, beautifully maturing blend of Tempranillo and Graciano grapes shows ample ripe fruits and the subtle bouquet of extra time in the bottle that shows up as mellow balsam and toasted nut nuances. It is complex, layered, mouthcoating and long on the finish.

Lodi | 2019

This delicious and well-balanced wine overflows with fresh cherry and raspberry flavors on an elegant texture. Smooth and polished while also showing a liveliness on the palate, it’s a beautiful example of what this grape variety can do in California.

Lodi | 2019

Silky and elegant but full-bodied, this wine gently carries concentrated, rich black and red fruits on an ultrasmooth texture. Fine-grained tannins add some grip on the palate without interrupting the enticing flow of this luscious wine.
