House of Prime Rib

1906 Van Ness Ave

$$$ • American (Traditional), Steakhouses, Wine Bars

Been talking about coming here for years and finally made it over last weekend! Our experience here from start to finish was awesome.

To start, there is valet parking on the corner right before the restaurant. It’s the easiest option for $14 as it’s close and you won’t waste a lifetime looking for parking.

This place was packed! We made our reservations 6 months ago and the earliest we could get on a Saturday was 9:30pm. Not ideal, but it was still great. Reservations are mandatory here. I recommend booking ASAP.

Our waiter Blue greeted us promptly and was an excellent server the whole night through. He was friendly and informative re: the menu and had us smiling the whole night. I would request him as a server if that was an option.

My bf ordered the King Henry cut and I ordered the English cut. All prime rib comes with the sides (which is nice and heart portions). Between both the sides were: mashed potatoes, baked potato, creamed spinach and corn and Yorkshire pudding. The mashed potatoes and gravy were delicious!! I wish I had more with my meal. The baked potato was yummy as well. Loved the creamed corn. The Yorkshire pudding did nothing for me. The starter salad was sooooo good!!!!

For dessert we had the baked apple crisp with vanilla pudding. OMG so good!!

Overall wonderful experience start to end! Reasonably priced as well. I already made our reservations. Earliest again on a Saturday isn’t until April!

Alexander’s Steakhouse

448 Brannan St

$$$$ • Steakhouses, Seafood, American (New)

I made reservations here for a birthday based off of hearing amazing things about Alexander’s and the famous cotton candy. If I could give this review 10 stars I would. From the moment we were greeted to the moment we left we were treated like we were the only ones in the restaurant. The service here is phenomenal. I wish I could remember our servers name because he was exceptional.

Everything from the food to the drinks were out of this world. I ordered the smoked mezcal which apparently was the last one to ever be served because the drink menu was being changed the next day. I won’t go into too much detail since it isn’t on the menu anymore but wow. It was unlike anything I’ve ever had. Perfect balance of smoke and a hint of sweet. We ordered 2 steaks to share. Both were delicious, but I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the steaks. For sides we ordered the truffle mash potatoes and the green beans. There are no words for the explosion of flavor that comes from these sides.

As if the bread and butter and main courses weren’t enough we had to order the chocolate soufflé. Just like the rest of our dinning experience it was next level. One of the best soufflés I’ve ever had. And of course we ended our night with the famous cotton candy.

I can’t recommend Alexander’s enough! 10/10 all the way!

Lolinda

2518 Mission St

$$$ • Steakhouses, Tapas/Small Plates, Latin American

We ate at Lolinda for my dad’s birthday, and boy did we eat well. We are from the east coast visiting and I’ve had my fair share of good meats. We had to make a reservation for the 5 of us on a Friday night and it was PACKED. Our waitress was absolutely lovely, always checked up on us and didn’t hurry us in any way.

What we ordered:
– ceviche mixto – AMAZING, came with these amazing corn fritters (our waitress gave us 3 more since the dish came with 5).
– pulpo – delicious, had this kind of tomatoey flavor, very different from the Greek-style octopus I usually eat
– hueso asado – I would skip this next time, at least to share for 5 people. We got a good solid 3 bites out of the bone marrow. It wasn’t a flavorful as I was expecting but maybe that’s just bone marrow.
– asado mixto – great selection of lots of different meats. The short rib was especially yummy. I loved the potatoes the most of all things!
– ojo de bife – omg YUM what a giant piece of delicious steak…so tender and juicy. A little extra salt and chimichurri made it magnificent.
– rabada (ox tail) – my favorite of the meats. The oxtail was SOOO tender and the sauce was to die for.
– rescoldo (side dish) – oh gosh this was super yummy. Lots of delicious veggies that went so well with all the meat.

Since it was my dads birthday they gave us a free slice of tres leches cake, and we also ordered the flourless chocolate cake. Both were TO DIE FOR – the chocolate cake didn’t have that nasty thickness I’m sometimes used to with flourless cake – it was so moist and soft. I’m still dreaming about them.

Overall, highly recommend this place for a fancy meal or celebration.

Niku Steakhouse

61 Division St

$$$$ • Japanese, Steakhouses

Amazing food and service. My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and right off the bat, staff greeted us and acknowledged our reason for celebrating.

Food wise, we got the crispy pig ears and bone marrow–we were blown away by both of these! The pig ears were crispy, and the perfect amount of savory and sweet. For entree and sides we got the a5 bushu 8oz to share and side of roasted carrots with black garlic, pistachio and date, and crispy potatoes with chickpea miso. Everything was prepared well and honestly the perfect amount of food where we weren’t overly stuffed. For dessert we got the wagyu fat brownie with miso dip n dots and toasted meringue. This was pretty rich but the miso dip n dots definitely helped with cutting through it!

We even got a taste of a super tasty toasted sesame brittle (?) that our server Ian brought out, and a chocolate shortbread oreo at the end which were great. Staff was so nice and attentive and they even gave us a card at the end with some love quotes! So cute.

We both walked out very impressed and agreed that Niku’s food and staff made our anniversary celebration incredibly memorable and fun. We’ll definitely be back!

Bobo’s Steakhouse

1450 Lombard St

$$$ • Steakhouses, Seafood, Cocktail Bars

I’ve always loved trying new steakhouse especially when traveling. Bobo’s was such a fun experience and the food was amazing.

As we entered, we noticed that we were completely overdressed! Compared to other steakhouse, Bobo’s had a more casual to neat casual attire and we were dressed in formal clothing

When it came to the food, we were completely speechless! The dry aged bone in ribeye was so tender and flavorful. It Is definitely a meal for two people. The filet mignon was also cooked perfectly just the way we like it. I highly recommend getting the mashed potatoes with your steak. It had such a smooth and soft texture and was very tasty with more of a garlic flavor to it.

We were bummed to find out that the lobster mac n cheese were no longer part of the menu. However, the host was so friendly and let us try it with crab meat! Definitely recommend it to try with your choice of seafood as well.

Harris’ Restaurant

2100 Van Ness Ave

$$$$ • Steakhouses

Classic San Francisco old school steakhouse. This place is awesome and service was spectacular. I had the prime rib that was so flavorful and tender, with scalloped potatoes.

The decor was just as you would expect from a up scale steakhouse. Beautiful booths, tall ceilings, dark wood walls. It was definitely a very local restaurant, bussiness dinners, family’s, and special occasions celebrations.

And believe it or not…. It wasn’t crazy expensive. Value was definitely in the portion sizes, wine selection was great, and we can’t wait to return.

5A5 Steak Lounge

244 Jackson St

$$$ • Steakhouses, Bars

My husband and I have been looking for a steak restaurant for months. I found 5A5 Steakhouse through yelp. It was booked for Valentine’s day and the following day. No biggie. We decided to celebrate Valentine’s day on Sunday Feburary 16th. I made a reservation through Yelp at 5:30pm.

We arrived 20minutes early and were asked if we could sit in the lounge/bar area. This place is beautiful! Lots of seating, great music playing. The bartender (sadly I did not get his name) was great! He was friendly, interactive, and the drinks he made were AMAZING! I got Love which is one of the cocktails, and my husband ordered the Smoked Manhattan. Both drinks were yummy! Strong but yummy.

The hostess found us at the bar at 5:30pm and took us to our table. John A. Was our waiter and he was FABULOUS! He made sure we knew about the specials and told us his recommendations for appetizers, the main courses and desserts.
For appetizers we ordered:
-U-10 Scallops
-Lobster Tempura
-Edemame
For the main course we ordered:
-Filet Minion with a side of Crimini Mushrooms
-New York Strip witb a side of Mashed Potatos
For dessert we ordered:
-7° of Coffee
-Banana Souffle
-Valrhona Chocolate Mousse Cake

Literally in between each course there were complementary things from chef. They were palette cleansers and they were so good! The service was on point. Everytime we finished a course, they would clean up our table, place the palette cleanser after. Once those were done, the next course would be placed. So on and so forth.

I highly recommend coming to this venue! And I will definitely return.

San Francisco

Original Joe’s

601 Union St

$$ • Italian, Steakhouses, Breakfast & Brunch

I’ve heard that Joe’s is a San Francisco classic, a must-go. Sad it took me so long to discover it, this place is a gem! The ambiance is amazing, very romantic and classic. The food is delicious, quite possibly the best Italian I’ve tried ever anywhere. And the service was just wonderful!

I went to Joe’s on a Tuesday night, reservations can be made in advance on OpenTable but we just walked up & the wait was only around 20-30 minutes (I hear it’s much longer on the weekends, plan ahead).

For appetizers, we had the arancini and it was delicious especially with the marinara which had kind of a lemon-y taste to it. Very good nonetheless! And for my main course I ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana. I thought I’d miss out on trying a pasta, but the Parm was DELICIOUS and I’m so glad I went with it! So flavorful, it was not missing a single thing. I also tried the fettuccini Alfredo which was also just wonderful, so creamy and full of flavor. And to finish off the dinner, I had the vanilla butter cake I believe it was called. The server told us folks come JUST for the dessert sometimes and man was it delicious! So warm and soft topped with vanilla ice cream but nothing too sweet at all.

I highly recommend coming to Joe’s for any occasion! The up-scale vibe is perfect for special times and also great for casual dinner dates with friends. I loved my experience so much and will definitely be back plenty! Thank you!

Bullshead Restaurant

840 Ulloa St

$$ • Steakhouses, Burgers, Sandwiches

Since Covid ; Bullshead has really coped VERY well, and is still serving the same quality aged beef, ground in house!  I order through app services and the food is well packed, and the staff is CAREFUL to get it right!  This place has had AMAZING CONSISTENCY over it’s many years…( like 30?), and if anything, the french fries are even better!  Most always the food comes hot!
One caveat I will give you is that their meat, which I think is the best ground beef, ANYWHERE  in town, (including one certain, very expensive chain steakhouse), but it IS healthy and LEAN!  If you order medium rare to RARE it will be juicy and healthy.( beef ground in house is NOT a health danger!) If you order it well done,  it may be a bit dry and you will probably wonder what the fuss is about.  At least add cheese and wet condiments if you can’t  tolerate a bit of pink  n your beef!  This goes DOUBLE for the buffalo, which is naturally a leaner meat! It is not a coincidence that all my rare meat eating friends , who I drag there, become ardent fans, while those who order well done are generally underwhelmed and would just as soon go to a chain!  For the cost and meat quality, the price for a half pound burger, at least medium Rare,  is a great and healthy DEAL! (  it tastes REAL, and you will leave STUFFED!)Their Steaks, which you can see in the front case, are great, too, well marbled, and very fairly priced!  The BULLSHEAD IS A LEGEND for people who know and appreciate QUALITY meat!  KUDOS to the family that has kept their standards unusually high, for all of these DECADES, and the ENERGETIC AND HAPPY TO PLEASE STAFF, who who keep it going so smoothly! I LOVE YOU!!

Brazen Head

3166 Buchanan St

$$ • Steakhouses, Gastropubs, American (Traditional)

Solid hidden gem. Old school bar and restaurant. My dinner was a heavenly, and perfectly cooked salmon filet, green veg and a baked potato. Utterly delicious, every bite. Our waitress was fabulous, friendly, helpful and attentive. Staff remained masked, so COVID protocols seemed fine.

Cozy place, dark, fun and eclectic art on the walls.  Filled up and conversations got noisy, but, our table conversation was never hindered.

Shared a dessert and the pie was delicious. For my first dinner out in over a year, this was lovely. Will come back, lots of tempting options on the menu.

The Vault Steakhouse

555 California St

$$$ • Steakhouses

I’m still full while writing this review and I don’t even care, I’m glowing. This place was amazing, and I’m not even the biggest steakhouse fan. My fiancé really wanted to go after reading a review (Eater perhaps?) and let me tell you they were preaching the truth. Cocktails were spot on as my martini was an incredible start to the night, my ribeye steak was PERFECT, and the sides were memorable (I’m looking at you maitake mushrooms and Brussel sprouts). My fiancé got the risotto, and being a risotto lover I’ll tell you this was definitely not an after thought by the chef. A big thank you to the wine director for a very diverse wine list and not just focusing on big dumb CA reds like other steakhouse are wont to do. The space was bright and exuded lovely touches that let you know it was formerly a real bank vault. Both myself and my fiancé are looking forward to going back, good work gang.

Gary Danko

800 N Point St

$$$$ • American (New), French, Wine Bars

I have been wanting to try this restaurant for years. I can’t believe I finally did it during the pandemic. I had full faith that it would still be wonderful. A restaurant rated so highly wouldn’t do take-out unless they could do it well.

We reserved our meal on-line and the pick-up process was pretty seemless. We arrived at our designated time and someone was there to greet us with our order. The restaurant provides detailed reheating instructions for all of their dishes. There is a lot of food and the portions are generous. After the first two courses I realized we couldn’t eat everything in one seating so I began splitting the portions. The meal lasted us two dinners.

We got the following items:

Mushroom & Leek Soup
Herb & Garlic Twists
Spring Tart with Ricotta, bacon and Parmigiano
Roast Duck
Zucchini with Basil butter
Three Grain Pilaf
Strawberry, lime, mascarpone

Everything was delicious and the reheating directions were very easy to follow. Nothing was too laborious.

There were so many other items on the menu that I wanted to try and after going through the process once I will be sure to order take-out from here again.

Leatherneck Steakhouse

609 Sutter St

$$$ • Steakhouses

A new favorite in San Francisco!

Came here to celebrate my mother’s birthday and had a great experience. We made reservations about a week before, and were easily able to get a table for our group of eight. We were seated right by the window- enjoying the beautiful view of downtown.

The location is great- close to union square and located in the Marines Memorial Club and Hotel. Drinks are great! Food is delicious! Staff is very kind and helpful with recommendations.

Celebrating something spacial like an anniversary or birthday- defiantly consider leatherneck!
